Introduction

The Grupo de Tratamiento de Imágenes (GTI) is a research group on theory, methods, and applications of Digital Image Processing, mainly for compression and analysis. It was established in 1981 and has achieved a successful record of graduate and postgraduate students (teaching in Digital Image Processing, Television, Image Encoding, Graphics, Computer Vision, and Telecommunications Systems) and of relevant participations in research projects related to visual communications, real time computer vision, and multimedia telecom applications. Its areas of expertise include:

- Theory and methods of digital image processing.

- Image and video compression (low bit-rate, TV, and HDTV), including IPTV and multiview coding.

- Computer vision and image analysis, including surveillance.

- 3D model coding and image synthesis.

- Multimedia coding and processing (feature extraction, indexing, summarization, search, …).

- Television (TV), High Definition Television (HDTV) and Three Dimensional Television (3DTV).

Stemming from its activity in video compression, computer vision, 3D dynamic model coding, IPTV and immersive communications, the UPM-GTI team provides unique cross-area knowledge, as well as the continuous attendance to worldwide standardization bodies.
